Ingredients

  • For the Cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water
  • For the Oreo Frosting:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream adjust for consistency
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups finely crushed Oreo cookies
  • Decoration:
  • Whole Oreos for topping
  • Extra Oreo crumbs for sprinkling

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined. Stir in hot water last; the batter will be thin.
  4. Divide batter evenly into pans and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cakes cool completely.
  5. For the frosting: beat butter until fluffy. Add powdered sugar gradually, then heavy cream and vanilla extract. Fold in crushed Oreos.
  6. Place one cake layer on a serving plate, spread frosting evenly, then add the second layer. Frost the outside of the cake.
  7. Decorate with whole Oreos on top and sprinkle extra crumbs around the sides. Chill 30 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • For a shortcut, use a boxed chocolate cake mix and add crushed Oreos.
  • Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Try swapping the chocolate base for vanilla for a cookies and cream cake variation.
  • Add extra Oreo crumbs between layers for a crunchier texture.
