Ingredients

  • For the Chocolate Cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water or brewed coffee
  • For the Buttercream Frosting:
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 –3 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Food coloring orange, black, green, purple, etc.
  • Optional Decorations:
  • Candy eyeballs
  • Fondant bats or pumpkins
  • Edible glitter
  • Crushed chocolate cookies for “dirt”
  • Gummy worms or candy skeletons

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.
  4. Stir in the hot water or coffee until combined. Batter will be thin.
  5. Divide batter evenly between pans and bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Let cakes cool completely before frosting.
  7. For frosting: beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla. Adjust consistency with more sugar or milk. Tint with food coloring as desired.
  8. Spread frosting between layers and over the outside of the cake.
  9. Decorate with spooky elements—create a ghost cake, witch cake, or coffin cake design using your decorations.

Notes

  • For darker cakes, use black cocoa powder.
  • A spooky cake can be made more realistic with red food gel or chocolate ganache “drips.”
  • For kids, stick with cute Halloween cakes using bright colors and edible sprinkles.
  • Leftovers store well in an airtight container for 3–4 days.
