Ingredients

  • For the Dough
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter softened
  • 1 large egg
  • Garlic Butter Topping
  • 6 tbsp melted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Optional: ¼ cup shredded parmesan or mozzarella

Method

  1. Activate the Yeast
  2. In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Make the Dough
  4. Add softened butter, egg, salt, and flour. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead
  6. Knead 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a little flour if sticky.
  7. First Rise
  8. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1 hour or until doubled.
  9. Shape the Rolls
  10. Punch down dough. Divide into 12 equal balls and arrange in a greased baking dish.
  11. Second Rise
  12. Cover again and let rise 20–25 minutes until puffy.
  13. Prepare Garlic Butter
  14. Mix melted butter, garlic, parsley, and salt.
  15. Brush & Bake
  16. Brush rolls with half the garlic butter.
  17. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–22 minutes or until golden brown.
  18. Finish
  19. Brush warm rolls with remaining garlic butter.
  20. Sprinkle parmesan or mozzarella if desired.

Notes

For cheesier rolls, add mozzarella inside each dough ball before shaping.
Use fresh garlic for the best flavor; garlic powder also works in a pinch.
To freeze: bake, cool, wrap tightly, and freeze up to 3 months.
These rolls pair perfectly with pasta, soups, salads, and grilled meats.
For softer rolls, place them close together in the baking dish so they rise into each other.
