Servings: 9 biscuits

Ingredients

  • For the Biscuits:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar optional
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter cubed
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup buttermilk or ¾ cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice
  • For the Garlic Butter Topping optional:
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon chopped parsley

Method

  1. Preheat oven:
  2. Preheat to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Mix dry ingredients:
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  5. Cut in butter:
  6. Add cold butter cubes and mix with a pastry cutter or fork until the texture resembles coarse crumbs.
  7. Add cheese and buttermilk:
  8. Stir in cheddar cheese. Pour in buttermilk and gently mix until dough just comes together. Do not overmix — it keeps the biscuits light and fluffy.
  9. Shape or drop:
  10. For easy drop biscuits, use a spoon or scoop to drop portions of dough onto the baking sheet. For traditional homemade biscuits, lightly flour a surface, pat the dough to 1-inch thickness, and cut with a biscuit cutter.
  11. Bake:
  12. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until tops are golden brown.
  13. Brush with garlic butter (optional):
  14. Mix melted butter with garlic powder and parsley, then brush over warm biscuits before serving.

Notes

  • Use cold butter for the fluffiest biscuits — it helps create airy layers.
  • Don’t overmix the dough; it should be slightly sticky.
  • To make an easy biscuit recipe 3 ingredients, just mix self-rising flour, cold butter, and buttermilk — then fold in cheddar.
  • Try variations like adding chives, bacon, or jalapeños for fun twists.
  • Best served warm, straight from the oven.
